Lockdown was lifted to pave way for EC, NIA planned activities – Yayra Koku

Jean Mensah, EC Chairperson

An outspoken member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yayra Koku has claimed the decision by the government to lift the partial lockdown is contrary to the norm.

Three weeks ago, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo partially locked down Greater Accra, Kasoa, Tema and Greater Kumasi as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

But addressing the nation Sunday evening, Mr Akufo-Addo said the restrictions of movement in the affected areas have been lifted. He indicated the directives takes effect from 1am Monday, April 20, 2020.

Despite lifting the lock-down for commercial activities to begin from Monday, schools and other public institutions will remain under lock-down for the foreseeable future.

The ban on social and religious gatherings will remain in force while the government seek to navigate the country out of the difficulties brought by the three-week lock-down.

The country’s borders remain closed for the next two weeks while a strict adherence to social distancing protocol, remain in place.

Reacting, however, to the President’s address, the NDC activist said he was fully convinced that Nana Akufo-Addo lifted the lockdown just so the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) could go-ahead to carry out their planned activities

Yayra Koku also claimed the President lifted the lockdown to allow the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) organise their parliamentary primaries.

“I have no doubt in my mind that he has lifted the lockdown to pave way for the EC & NIA to carry out their planned activities and also allow the NPP to do their presidential and parliamentary election”, he wrote on Facebook.

The post added: “Akufo-Addo is thinking about the next election not your health”.

Meanwhile, the country’s COVID-19 case count has increased to 1,042 according to the President.

Paramount Queen mother of Ejisu Nana Yaa Asantewaa II (draped in yellow)

The Paramount Queen mother of Ejisu in the Ashanti Region has called on security officials enforcing the partial lockdown in her paramountcy to beat up residents who defy the presidential directive.

“I see the young girls and boys always on the streets, left to me alone I support stiffer punishment like beating the recalcitrant ones on the streets. Beating will compel people with no business of being out to stay home and nurse the injuries than to die from the virus infection. When you beat them they will cook hot water to nurse their injuries, nobody will like to walk on the street with wounds,’’ she said while making a donation to the Ejisu government hospital.

She donated items including 2 automatic dispensers, 10 gallons of 4.5 litres of hand sanitizers, 30 gallons of 5 litres rubbing alcohol, 10 piece of veronica buckets and drain basin, 24 packets of hand gloves, 100 pieces of Deva hand soap and 240 pieces of ever pack jumbo towels among others.

AJAX star Abdelhak ‘Appie’ Nouri has miraculously woken up after two years and nine months in a coma.

The 22-year-old Dutch ace collapsed on the pitch in July 2017 after suffering a cardiac arrhythmia attack.

He sustained severe and permanent brain damage as a direct result of the incident.

Nouri is now awake and “sleeps, eats, frowns and burps but is very dependent”.

Abdelhak’s brother Abderrahim said that the footballer is “doing well” and lives in a house specially built for him.

He told Dutch TV show De Wereld Draait Door: “He has not been home very long, we take care of him there now. I must say that since he is at home it is going much better than before in the hospital.

“He is aware of where he is, he is back in a familiar environment with his family.

“He’s no longer in a coma. He’s very bedridden and still very dependent on us.”

The pair communicate not through words or signals but through raising their eyebrows.

Perhaps the most heartwarming news of all is that he can watch football again, and even reacts to it.

His father Mohammed said Appie – who joined the Dutch club aged seven – and his family had been through a “serious ordeal”.

He added: “We have to take care of him at our very best. We try to do a lot ourselves.”

The news is all the more incredible given the fact the family said in July 2017 that he had virtually no chance of recovery and was in a permanent vegetative state.

Coronavirus: Bawumia launches Universal QR Code for cashless transactions.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, 25 March 2020, under the auspices of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems Limited (GhIPPS), a subsidiary of the Bank of Ghana, launched Ghana’s Universal Quick Response (QR) Code and Proxy Pay system online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ghana, thus, becomes the first country in Africa, and one of only a few countries in the world to launch a Universal QR Code.

Dr Bawumia speaking at the launch said: “we need to minimize the use of cash in the face of Coronavirus because banknotes, like anything we touch, are a transmission channel.”

He underscored that the Universal QR CODE will make it possible for all merchants, service providers and institutions to receive payments from bank accounts, Zurich accounts, mobile money wallets or internationally-issued visa or MasterCards instantly.

Any merchant can have a universal QR CODE: e.g. chop bars, food vendors, barbers, carpenters or masons, musicians, shoeshine boys, kebab or ‘Kofi brokeman’ sellers, market traders, trotros, taxis, churches, mosques, schools, funeral committees, wedding organisers etc.

Dr. Bawumia urged every merchant or service provider to get a universal QR CODE from their bank, telco or a fintech as soon as possible.

“I also urge every adult to get a bank account or a mobile money account immediately. The QR CODE will work with both smartphones and ‘yam’ phones,” he added.

He noted that the Universal QR CODE provides Ghana with the vehicle to move towards a cashless economy and, therefore, encouraged every Ghanaian to get onboard.

I’ve not retired from Black Stars; I’ll play if recalled – Asamoah Gyan

Former captain of the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan says he will readily honour an invitation to the national team if handed a call-up.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Pulse.com.gh, Gyan said he is still available for selection, adding that he has not retired from the national team.

The 34-year-old has played for the Black Stars for almost two decades, having made his international debut in 2003.

However, he has not featured for the national team since featuring at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The striker, however, insists he is ready to lead the line for the Black Stars again if he’s invited.

“I’m still available for the Black Stars. You know there were a lot of controversies but we were able to settle it,” he told Pulse.com.gh.

“I haven’t retired from the national team officially. I retired from the national team officially [when] I sent the letter.

“I had to … The president spoke to me and I had to just come back to the national team. For now, I am still available till the day I will call it a day for the international side.”

Gyan joined NorthEast United on a free transfer in September 2019 after leaving Turkish club Kayserispor in June.

He made a flying start at the Indian club, netting two goals in his first three league games, but has been blighted by injury issues.

Meanwhile, Gyan is currently Ghana’s all-time top-scorer with 51 goals.

John Boye, Afful, others will get their chance

Black Stars gaffer C.K Akunnor says he has not slammed the door on veterans like John Boye, Harrison Afful , Johnathan Mensah and some other players of the old guard.

According to the coach he does not want to make too many changes to the team and so decided to hand call ups to majority of the squad who featured in the double header against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.

The Black Stars coached announced his squad for the Afcon 2021 qualifier against Sudan later this month and notable absentees from the squad included 32 year old FC Metz defender John Boye who has been in fine form for his Ligue 1 strugglers.

In answering a question about John Boye’s absence, C.K Akonnor noted that Boye still has a chance of being in future Black Star squads.

“John Boye, Jonathan Mensah, Harrison (Afful) and the rest, I respect them, you know I have been a player before and I know what they’ve done for this country and if the need be for them to come into the team, they will.”

The Black Stars trainer says he decided to keep faith with those who played the last qualifiers.

“I made mention of the squad that played the last time, this is my first time, I don’t want to change things too much…John Boye and the rest, they are important, their time will come” he concluded.

Ghana will play against Sudan in the 2021 Afcon qualifier on the 27th March 2020 at Cape Coast before traveling to Sudan on the last day of March 2020 for the return encounter.

2020/21 UEFA Nations League Draw: England to Face Belgium as France Meet Portugal & Croatia.

The 2020/21 UEFA Nations League draw has pitted England against Belgium, Denmark and Iceland in a tough League A Group 2. Meanwhile, France will meet Croatia in League A Group 3 in a rematch of the 2018 World Cup final, alongside Sweden and holders Portugal.

Elsewhere in League A, Netherlands and Italy have been drawn in the same group as each other, while Germany and Spain will also go head to head in a different group.

The four group winners in League A will contest the Nations League Finals in June 2021.

Due to a revamp of the structure from the first Nations League competition, no teams were ultimately relegated, keeping the likes of Germany and 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia in League A despite finishing bottom of their respective groups last time.

There will now be four competing countries in each of the four groups for Leagues A to C, with only two groups for the bottom tier League D.

The overall concept is the same as before – even though the relegations were voided. The winners of each group in League B, C and D will be promoted to the next level for the 2022/23 Nations League, while the bottom team in each group for A and B will be relegated. There are also two playoff places for 2022 World Cup qualifying up for grabs.

Given that League D only has two groups, the bottom four countries in the League C groups will enter relegation playoffs to determine who will drop to the lowest level.

League A Group 1: Netherlands, Italy, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Poland Group 2: England, Belgium, Denmark, IcelandnGroup 3: Portugal, France, Sweden, Croatia Group 4: Switzerland, Spain, Ukraine,

League B Group 1: Austria, Norway, Northern Ireland, Romania Group 2: Czech Republic, Scotland, Slovakia, Israel Group 3: Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary Group 4: Wales, Finland, Republic of Ireland, Bulgaria

League C Group 1: Azerbaijan, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Montenegro Group 2: Armenia, Estonia, North Macedonia, Georgia Group 3: Moldova, Slovenia, Kosovo, Greece Group 4: Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Belarus, Albania

League D Group 1: Malta, Andorra, Latvia, Faroe Islands Group 2: San Marino, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar

Each team will play home and away and the games will be played as per the following schedule:

Matchday 1: 3–5 September 2020

Matchday 2: 6–8 September 2020

Matchday 3: 8–10 October 2020
